A near-threatened Himalayan griffon vulture, rarely seen in Bangladesh, was rescued in Khagrachhari and sent for treatment, highlighting the importance of protecting rare wildlife species in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
A Himalayan griffon vulture, one of South Asia’s largest birds and rarely seen in Bangladesh, has been rescued by forest officials in Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila.
The vulture was found this morning inside a house about eight kilometres from Bhaibonchara Bazar in Bhaibonchara union of the Chittagong Hill Tracts region, according to Md Farid Miah, Divisional Forest Officer of Khagrachhari.
“The bird appeared to be sick. After the rescue, it was immediately sent to the district Animal Resources Department for treatment,” Farid said.
Himalayan griffon vultures are considered near threatened and sightings in Bangladesh are extremely uncommon, making this rescue a significant event for wildlife conservation. Forest officials are monitoring the bird’s recovery and stressed the importance of protecting rare species and raising public awareness about wildlife preservation.
