Police in Khagrachhari stopped a motorcyclist transporting chickens upside down, a violation of Bangladesh’s Animal Welfare Act 2019, seizing the bike and transferring the birds to proper transport after interception.
Police in southeastern Bangladesh stopped a motorcyclist on Friday (March 6) for transporting chickens by hanging them upside down, an act considered cruelty to animals under the country’s animal welfare law.
The incident occurred at the Zero Mile area of Khagrachhari when officers intercepted the motorcycle carrying the birds in the inhumane manner, authorities said.

Under Bangladesh’s Animal Welfare Act 2019, transporting ducks or chickens upside down is a punishable offence. The law treats such acts as cruelty toward animals and inhumane treatment. Offenders can face up to six months in prison, a fine of up to 10,000 taka, or both.
After the motorcyclist was stopped, the chickens were transferred to a CNG-run auto rickshaw and sent to Khagrachhari town. Police also seized the motorcycle used in transporting the birds.
Authorities said the chickens were being brought to Khagrachhari town from Tablachhari in Matiranga, a distance of about 60 kilometres.
Officials advised that chickens must be transported using proper cages when carried on motorcycles to ensure animal welfare and compliance with the law.
