Rajshahi observed World Environment Day 2026 with discussions, tree planting, a human chain and sapling distribution, highlighting climate action, biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness among citizens and students.
World Environment Day 2026 was observed in Rajshahi, a metropolitan city in northwestern Bangladesh, on Friday (June 5) through a series of programmes including a discussion meeting, tree plantation campaign, human chain and sapling distribution under the theme “Climate Change: Today’s Action, Tomorrow’s Security.”
The programmes were organised by the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Forum and began with a discussion meeting at 10:30 am in the conference room of the administrative building of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET).
RUET Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Kader Jilani attended the event as the chief guest. Renowned zoologist and biodiversity expert Prof. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Das presented the keynote paper on the theme of this year’s observance.
Among the special guests were Prof. Dr. BK Dam, president of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Forum; Prof. Dr. Md. Jalal Uddin Sardar, founding dean of the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Rajshahi University and president of the Bangladesh Livestock Society; Mainul Islam, PPM (Bar), deputy commissioner of police of the Motihar Division of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police; and Dr. Nasir Uddin, president of the Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF).
The meeting was chaired by Z. H. M. Manjur Morshed, deputy director of Student Welfare at RUET.
Dr. Molya Rezaul Karim, chief adviser of the Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation and conservator of forests of the Coastal Circle, Barishal under the Forest Department, delivered the welcome address as the inaugurator of the programme.
The event was moderated by Engineer Junaid Ahmed, founder and general secretary of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Forum.
Following the discussion, participants joined a tree plantation campaign and a human chain programme. Around 300 fruit-bearing, timber and medicinal plant saplings were distributed among attendees.
The event was supported by the Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF), the Office of the Director of Student Welfare at RUET, Mission Green and the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA).
