Minister urges youth to protect Cumilla’s Gomati River

During a visit to the Gomati River in Comilla, Agriculture Minister Aminur Rashid Yasin urged youth and local communities to protect the river from pollution, illegal soil extraction and encroachment.

Aminur Rashid Yasin, Minister of Agriculture, visited the Gomati River on Friday afternoon to assess its current condition and raise awareness about the urgent need for river conservation. During his tour he inspected several areas along the river and spoke with locals about the challenges facing this vital waterway.

The minister also expressed concern about ongoing soil extraction and land encroachment in riverine areas warning that such activities could threaten the river’s flow and ecological balance.

Speaking to the gathered community the minister emphasized that the Gomati River is critical for the environment, biodiversity and agriculture. He urged everyone to work collectively to prevent pollution and stop the dumping of waste into the river.

Highlighting the role of the younger generation Yasin encouraged local youth to take an active role in protecting the river. Later he joined young people for an Iftar meal by the riverbank exchanging views on environmental protection and the importance of sustainable practices in river management.

Authorities and community leaders say protecting rivers like the Gomati is not only an environmental priority but also essential for sustaining livelihoods food security and local ecosystems.
