Minister Mintoo vows legal action for farmers affected by EPZ pollution

Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo pledged legal support for farmers seeking compensation over alleged Cumilla EPZ pollution, promising action to restore the canal, curb industrial waste and ensure accountability.

Bangladesh’s Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo has pledged to pursue legal action, if necessary, to secure compensation for farmers who say their crops, agricultural land and livelihoods have been harmed by industrial waste discharged from the Cumilla Export Processing Zone (EPZ).

Speaking at a meeting with affected farmers at Bijoypur Women’s College grounds in Cumilla Sadar South Upazila on Sunday, the minister said those who have suffered losses due to environmental pollution must receive compensation.

“The affected farmers must be compensated. If necessary, I am prepared to go to court on your behalf to ensure justice,” he said.

The meeting was attended by local residents who have long complained about pollution in the Gongingajuri Canal, alleging that industrial effluents from the nearby EPZ have contaminated water resources, damaged farmland and affected agricultural production in surrounding communities.

During his visit, the minister inspected the canal and expressed concern about its condition.

“I was deeply saddened by what I saw. The environment should not be in this condition,” he said.

Mintoo said he would hold discussions with EPZ authorities within the week to address the issue and determine the necessary measures to prevent further environmental damage.

“It does not matter which ministry the EPZ falls under. If industrial waste is harming people and the environment, that cannot be allowed to continue,” he said.

The minister emphasized that Bangladesh’s economic development and environmental protection must go hand in hand.

“Industrialization is important, but safeguarding the environment is equally important. We need both EPZs and a healthy environment,” he said.

He also pledged to work toward restoring the canal and ensuring greater accountability for pollution, warning that industries must comply with environmental regulations and waste management standards.

Highlighting the broader importance of environmental protection, the minister said a healthy environment is essential for the physical and mental development of children and reaffirmed his commitment to carrying out his responsibilities effectively.

“If I fail to do my duty, you can hold me accountable,” he told local residents.

Member of Parliament Monirul Haque Chowdhury, who represents the Cumilla-6 constituency, also addressed the gathering as a special guest.

The allegations against the Cumilla EPZ come amid growing concerns in Bangladesh about industrial pollution and its impact on agricultural communities, water resources and public health. No immediate response from EPZ authorities was available following the minister’s remarks.
