Heavy rain may trigger floods in northeastern Bangladesh districts: warning

Heavy rainfall over the next five days may raise river levels across northeastern Bangladesh, increasing flood risks in haor regions and low-lying areas, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre.

Moderate to very heavy rainfall is likely over the next five days across Bangladesh’s northeastern haor region and other areas, raising the risk of flooding in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Habiganj and Moulvibazar, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said.

In a warning signed on Saturday by assistant engineer Mostafa Kamal Jihan, the centre said rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts under the Surma-Kushiyara basin had remained stable over the past 24 hours, but water levels could rise over the next three days because of very heavy rainfall.

It said the Kushiyara River may cross the pre-monsoon danger level at some points, which could trigger flooding in low-lying areas adjacent to the haors. Water levels in the Sarigowain and Jadukata rivers are also feared to rise.

In Netrokona, water levels in the Bhugai-Kangsha and Someshwari rivers have fallen slightly, but are still flowing above the danger mark. The warning said water levels may remain stable over the next few days, but the existing flood situation in low-lying areas could continue.

It also said the situation may worsen further as water in the Mogra River is increasing.

Under the Dhanu-Baulai basin, water levels are rising in Kishoreganj and Netrokona districts. In particular, water at the Khaliajuri point of the Baulai River may cross the danger level within the next 48 hours, which could create a fresh flood situation, the warning said.

The centre said conditions may deteriorate further in Habiganj and Moulvibazar districts. Water levels in the Manu, Khowai and Juri rivers may increase over the next three days.

Of those rivers, the Khowai and Juri may quickly cross the danger level while the Manu may rise above the warning level, it said.
