Five brick kilns sued in Madaripur, illegal firewood seized

An environmental court drive in Madaripur filed cases against five illegal brick kilns and seized firewood, highlighting ongoing violations of environmental laws and unlicensed operations in the district.

Authorities filed cases against five brick kilns and seized illegal firewood during an environmental court operation in Madaripur, a central district in Bangladesh on Saturday (April 11), officials said.

The drive was conducted in the afternoon in Panchkhola under Sadar upazila by Environment Court Magistrate Mohammad Eliam Hossain, following allegations of illegal wood burning and other violations.

Officials said a total of seven brick kilns were inspected during the operation. Of them, five kiln owners were charged with multiple offences. The accused include JSB, MRK, Ashfaq, Anwar Khan and AKB Bricks, all found operating without valid licenses and environmental clearance.

Magistrate Hossain said the kilns had been burning wood unlawfully for a long time along with committing various irregularities. The court launched the operation based on such reports.

He added that the cases filed against the kiln owners would be tried in court in accordance with the law.

Authorities also seized firewood stored at the kilns, which was being used illegally as fuel.

Those present during the operation included Department of Environment Assistant Director in Madaripur Ariful Islam, Administrative Officer of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Al Mamun, Nazir Mohammad Shahidul Islam and Bench Assistant Wahiduzzaman, among others.
