Bangladesh proposes Tk 1 billion for climate trust, targets 250 million trees

Bangladesh’s 2026-27 budget proposes Tk 100 crore for the Climate Change Trust, a 250 million-tree plantation drive, carbon trading expansion and new measures to reduce pollution and waste.

Bangladesh has proposed allocating Tk 100 crore ($1 billion taka equivalent) to the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust in the 2026-27 national budget while finalising plans to plant 10 million trees under its “One Child, One Tree” programme as part of broader efforts to strengthen climate resilience.

Presenting the national budget in parliament on Thursday, the finance minister said Bangladesh remains one of the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, facing growing challenges from rising global temperatures, sea-level rise, salinity intrusion, cyclones and floods.

The minister said the government is implementing a range of initiatives aimed at building a livable Bangladesh for future generations. As part of those efforts, a target has been set to plant 250 million trees across the country over the next five years.

The large-scale afforestation programme is expected to create approximately 350,000 green jobs both directly and indirectly, according to the budget speech.

For the 2026-27 fiscal year, the government has set specific plantation targets that include 42.897 million saplings across 25,960 hectares of block plantations, 3.727 million saplings along 3,727 kilometres of strip plantations, 17.776 million saplings on 4,000 hectares of mangrove plantations and 5.6 million saplings under homestead forestry programmes.

The finance minister also announced plans to bring 50 percent of coastal mangrove forests under carbon trading activities as part of efforts to address the effects of climate change.

In addition, the government plans to implement a “Circular Future Model” to improve waste management practices nationwide.

To curb environmental pollution, regular air quality monitoring will continue while 10 modern vehicle inspection centres will be established through the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to reduce emissions from vehicles. The government is also planning to introduce electric bus services.

The budget proposals further include the formulation of new guidelines and updated regulations for the management of electronic waste. Bangladesh has also set a target to reduce plastic waste by 30 percent over the next five years.
