DU, Indonesia’s BRIN sign MoU to boost ocean and blue economy research

Dhaka University and Indonesia’s BRIN have signed an MoU to strengthen collaboration in ocean science, climate change, blue economy research, academic exchange, capacity building and joint scientific initiatives.

Bangladesh’s public university, the University of Dhaka, and Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday to strengthen collaboration in ocean science, climate change and blue economy research.

The agreement was signed between the International Centre for Ocean Governance (ICOG) at the University of Dhaka and BRIN’s Research Center for Deep Sea at a ceremony held at the conference room adjacent to the vice chancellor’s office of the university.

University of Dhaka Treasurer Prof. Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Head of BRIN’s Research Center for Deep Sea Prof. Dr. A’an Wahyudi signed the MoU on behalf of their respective institutions.

The agreement on research collaboration in ocean science, climate change and the blue economy is expected to open a new chapter of long-term cooperation between Bangladesh and Indonesia in marine science research, climate change studies, blue economy development, capacity building, academic exchange and joint scientific initiatives.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury highlighted the importance of international research partnerships in addressing global challenges related to climate change, ocean governance and sustainable development.

He expressed hope that the collaboration between the University of Dhaka and BRIN would create new opportunities for cutting-edge research, strengthen scientific capacity and promote the exchange of knowledge and innovation in support of the blue economy agendas of both countries.

Among others present at the ceremony were Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences Prof. Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir, ICOG Visiting Scientist Prof. Dr. Tonia Astrid Kapuano, Director of the International Affairs Office Prof. Dr. Syeda Rozana Rashid and researchers and representatives from BRIN’s Research Center for Deep Sea.

The programme was coordinated by ICOG Director Dr. K M Azam Chowdhury.

The signing of the MoU marks another significant milestone for the International Centre for Ocean Governance in its continued commitment to promoting the sustainable management of marine and coastal resources, expanding research collaboration and strengthening global partnerships.
