The bird’s monsoon breeding cycle depends on stable rainfall, grasses, insects and nesting trees, making habitat protection increasingly important as weather patterns become less predictable.
The Baya Weaver, one of South Asia’s most distinctive birds, is facing growing pressure as rising temperatures, erratic rainfall and stronger storms alter the wetlands, grasslands and agricultural landscapes it depends on.
Known for its intricately woven hanging nests, the bird usually breeds during the monsoon when grasses and other plant fibres are abundant. But changing rainfall patterns can disrupt breeding conditions, while intense storms and heavy rain may damage nests built on palm, acacia and other trees.
Prolonged heat and drought can also reduce the availability of grasses, seeds and insects, affecting both nesting materials and food. Changes in farming practices and the loss of trees and wetlands add further pressure to the species.
Climate change does not act alone, but scientists warn that increasingly unpredictable weather can make survival harder for birds whose breeding cycles are closely linked to seasonal rainfall.
Protecting wetlands, grasslands, nesting trees and climate-resilient habitats will be important to ensure the Baya Weaver continues to remain a familiar part of Bangladesh’s rural landscape.
