A climate-focused campaign in coastal Munshiganj addressed sanitation and health risks for women and adolescent girls, boosting awareness, resilience and community action against climate change in vulnerable southwest Bangladesh communities.
A climate-focused health campaign aimed at protecting women and adolescent girls from growing climate-related risks has been held in a vulnerable coastal area of southwestern Bangladesh, organisers said.
The two-day Climate Campaign Program took place on December 17 and 18 in Munshiganj Union under Shyamnagar Upazila of Satkhira district, an area increasingly exposed to the impacts of climate change. The initiative sought to address rising health risks among women and adolescent girls by strengthening sanitation practices and promoting health awareness.
The program was implemented with financial support from international donor agency Woord and Daad and jointly organised by CCDb and Friendship. Activities were carried out among poor and at-risk communities in Central Kalinagar village of Ward No. 2 and East Kalinagar village of Ward No. 4 in Munshiganj Union.
According to the organisers, climate change has intensified health challenges for women in coastal regions, making awareness and preventive practices critical. The campaign focused on building understanding of personal hygiene, sanitation and climate-resilient behaviour to help communities adapt to changing environmental conditions.
A total of 100 women and adolescent girls from Wards No. 2 and 4 took part in the program. Alongside interactive discussions on health and sanitation, a colourful rally was organised to spread awareness messages throughout the local area.
Organisers said such initiatives play an important role in safeguarding the health of women and adolescent girls in coastal communities and in strengthening local capacity to confront the adverse effects of climate change.
