Bangladesh honours environmental champions at 2025 national awards

The awards spotlight conservation, education and innovation efforts as Bangladesh marks World Environment Day amid rising climate, pollution and biodiversity pressures.

Bangladesh has honoured three individuals and three institutions with the National Environment Award 2025 for their outstanding contributions to ecological protection, environmental education, public awareness and research-driven solutions.

The awards were presented during the national celebration of World Environment Day 2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka on Thursday. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman handed over the awards to the recipients at the ceremony, which brought together government representatives, environmental experts, researchers and stakeholders working on sustainability and conservation.

The National Environment Award recognizes individuals and organizations contributing to Bangladesh’s efforts to address growing environmental challenges, including pollution control, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable development.

In the Environmental Conservation and Pollution Control category, Md Hasmat Ali, assistant professor at Alhaj Farhad Ali Memorial Degree College, received the award for his contribution to protecting ecosystems and reducing environmental degradation.

Md Monir Hossain was honoured in the Environmental Education and Awareness category for his efforts to promote environmental knowledge and strengthen public engagement on ecological issues.

Professor Dr Abdus Salam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Dhaka, received the award in the Environmental Research and Technology Innovation category for his contributions to scientific research and technological advancement.

Among institutions, Classical Handmade Products BD Ltd received recognition in the Environmental Conservation and Pollution Control category. The Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences at the University of Chittagong was awarded in the Environmental Education and Awareness category, while the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute received the honour for Environmental Research and Technology Innovation.

In addition, 21 individuals were recognized across seven categories for their exceptional contributions to tree plantation and green initiatives.

Bangladesh’s Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo and other senior officials attended the event along with representatives from academic institutions, civil society organizations and environmental groups.

As one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, Bangladesh continues to face increasing pressures from climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. Recognizing environmental leadership through such awards highlights the importance of innovation, public participation and collective action in building a more sustainable future.
