Satkhira marks Environment Day with rally, calls for climate action

A rally and discussion in Satkhira marked World Environment Day, with environmental activists and community leaders calling for stronger climate action, biodiversity conservation, reduced plastic use and greater public awareness.

Environmental activists, community leaders and representatives of various civil society organizations in Satkhira observed World Environment Day on Friday, calling for greater public awareness to protect nature, combat climate change, conserve biodiversity and reduce pollution.

The observance was organized by the Environment Protection Forum (EPF), SoDESH-Satkhira and various like-minded organizations under the international theme of World Environment Day 2026, “Protecting Nature – Protecting Climate.”

As part of the programme, a rally was brought out at 10 a.m. from the Government Secondary School grounds. A discussion meeting was later held at the Mangrove Meeting Room.

Speakers at the event urged people to become more conscious about environmental protection and climate action, emphasizing the need for increased tree plantation, reduced plastic use and efforts to create a safe and green world for future generations.

They said environmental balance is being disrupted by excessive carbon emissions, deforestation, pollution of rivers and other water bodies, plastic waste and unplanned urbanization. As a result, the average temperature of the Earth is rising while cyclones, droughts, floods, sea-level rise and biodiversity loss are increasing day by day.

The speakers stressed that conserving nature remains one of the most effective ways to protect the climate and called for greater awareness about tree planting and biodiversity conservation to address climate change.

The discussion meeting was attended by Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) Satkhira Committee District Convener Advocate Abul Kalam Azad, women leader Maryam Mannan, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad General Secretary Jyotsna Dutta, Rupa Basu, landless leader Abdus Samad, Mofizur Rahman, social worker Sakibur Rahman Babla and youth representatives Zarin Tasmin, Jhilik, Tanjim Hossain, Suraiya and Mehedi Hasan, among others.

EPF member Madhav Chandra Dutta moderated the programme and presented the day’s discussion paper.

At the end of the event, prizes were awarded to three winners of a quiz competition organized as part of the World Environment Day observance.
