PHP Ship Recycling Yard, a pioneer in sustainable shipbreaking in Bangladesh, follows international safety and environmental standards. It employs 277 workers, enforces zero-discharge policies, manages hazardous materials responsibly and has recycled certified green vessels from Brazil and Japan.
In a significant nod to green industrial transformation, PHP Ship Breaking and Recycling Industries Ltd (PHP SBRIL) has been awarded the Green Factory Award 2025, reaffirming its leadership in sustainable ship recycling practices in Bangladesh.

The accolade was conferred on Tuesday at a ceremony hosted at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, organised by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Receiving the award were PHP Family Chairman and Ekushey Padak recipient Alhaj Sufi Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, alongside Managing Director Md Zahirul Islam Rinku, according to a company release.
This year, 30 companies spanning industries from garments and textiles to shipbuilding and pharmaceuticals were recognised for their efforts in green manufacturing, energy efficiency, workplace safety, and waste reduction.

Founded in 2000, PHP SBRIL has grown into one of the country’s most respected ship recycling companies, underpinned by the PHP Family’s guiding ethos of “Happiness, Peace, and Prosperity.” The company now employs 277 workers and adheres to international frameworks such as the Hong Kong Convention 2009 and ILO labour safety standards, setting benchmarks in eco-conscious dismantling operations.
PHP’s environmental credentials are reflected in high-profile projects. In 2018, it dismantled the Brazilian vessel Ore Vitoria, a globally certified green ship. More recently, in 2023, Japan’s NYK Line selected PHP to recycle the MV KAMO, marking Bangladesh’s first direct ship recycling partnership with Japan—a milestone for the country’s maritime sector.
The company’s commitment goes beyond compliance. PHP enforces a zero-discharge policy, strict hazardous waste management, and maintains a full Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM)—a critical tool in reducing environmental and human health risks during ship recycling.
Tuesday’s award ceremony featured prominent dignitaries including Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr Shakhawat Hossain, adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment; Adilur Rahman Khan, adviser to the ministries of Industries and Housing; and AHM Shafiquzzaman, Secretary of Labour and Employment.
Other awardees ranged across sectors: Square Fashions, Pioneer Denim, Walton Hi-Tech, Akij Food and Beverage, Mirzapur Tea Garden, Pragoti Industries, and BSRM Steels, among others—reflecting the government’s broader push for green growth across Bangladesh’s industrial landscape.
With its award-winning performance, PHP SBRIL is not only dismantling ships—but also old notions that industrial development and environmental stewardship can’t go hand in hand.
