Concerned citizens rescued an injured barn owl from a busy Dhaka road and handed it to wildlife authorities for treatment, with rescuers praising the quick public response.
An injured barn owl was rescued by concerned citizens from in front of the National Gastroliver Institute and Hospital in one of Dhaka’s busiest areas and sent for treatment and rehabilitation, wildlife rescuers said.
The rescuers immediately informed Wildlife and Snake Rescue Team Bangladesh after spotting the bird in distress, prompting a rapid response from the organisation.
Following the report, team member Saif Roudro reached the scene quickly under the direction of WSRTBD’s Dhaka representative Russell and rescued the injured owl with great care, the organisation said.
After an initial assessment, the bird was handed over for advanced treatment and rehabilitation to the relevant treatment centre of the Wildlife Crime Control Unit in Agargaon in the capital.
“Passers-by saw the bird lying in a helpless condition on the road and contacted us quickly,” rescuer Saif Roudro said. “Because the right steps were taken in time, it was possible to save the bird from a life-threatening danger.”
The owl is now undergoing treatment at the wildlife treatment centre and will be released into a suitable environment after it recovers, the rescuers said.
Environmentalists have responded positively to what they described as an act of public awareness and humanity in the mechanical noise of the busy city.
