An endangered fishing cat delivers two kittens in a Jhenaidah village home, prompting swift action by wildlife officials and villagers to protect the family and respect conservation laws locally together.
A rare fishing cat gave birth to two kittens inside an abandoned room of a house in Jelepota village, Shyamkar Union, Maheshpur Upazila, Jhenaidah. The mother and her newborns are completely reliant on her milk and took shelter under a straw platform, raising curiosity among local residents.
Curious teenagers gathered at the scene, causing a stir in the neighborhood. Wildlife conservation workers quickly arrived to control the situation and ensure the kittens’ safety. Officials stressed that because the kittens are very young and the mother is present, no human interference is needed. In time, the mother cat is expected to move her babies to a safer spot on her own.
The Forest and Wildlife Department reminded locals that the fishing cat is a protected wildlife species and harming or killing it is a punishable offense under the law. Understanding the legal risks, villagers and teenagers pledged to safeguard the mother and her kittens.
Shahin Islam, the owner of the house, said, “Neither the mother cat nor her kittens will be harmed. I will personally take care of them.”
Thanks to quick intervention, awareness and community cooperation, the fishing cat and her two kittens are now safe. Wildlife officers emphasized that timely awareness and empathy from locals are crucial in protecting endangered species.
