Fish killed in poisoning attack on canal in Anwara, fisheries office confirms

Dead fish floated in Khodala Canal after poisoning was allegedly dumped overnight in Anwara, prompting a fisheries inspection, recovery of 25 kilograms of fish and a promised investigation.

Fish were killed after poisoning was dumped into Khodala Canal, a branch of the Ichamati Canal in Chattogram’s Anwara upazila, with the local fisheries office confirming the incident after an on-site visit.

The poisoning took place late on Sunday, April 5, in the Kaikhain area of the upazila, according to the fisheries office.

Officials said local residents usually meet their fish needs from the canal by catching fish with rods and small nets.

After receiving reports, fisheries officials visited the site on Monday morning, April 6, and found dead fish of different species floating in the canal. Around 25 kilograms of fish were recovered during the inspection.

Local people said miscreants had poisoned the canal during the night, killing the fish and taking some of them away.

Anwara Senior Fisheries Officer Md Rashedul Haque said the inspection confirmed that poison had been used.

He said those involved would be identified through an investigation and legal action would be taken against them.
