A rare Bengal slow loris was rescued in Cumilla’s Chauddagram after apparently suffering an electric shock, local officials said on Wednesday.
The animal, identified as Nycticebus bengalensis, was first spotted on yesterday afternoon in Baidderkhil village on the edge of Chauddagram municipality. Local residents rescued it and later handed it over to the upazila administration.
According to local accounts, resident Abdul Momin secured the animal after seeing it in the border-adjacent village area. After being informed, Arafat Hossain of the Chauddagram Quick Response Team took the slow loris into custody through the upazila administration.
On Wednesday morning, the animal was transferred to the upazila livestock office, where it underwent a health examination and received treatment before being returned to the upazila administration. It was later handed over to the upazila forest department.
Upazila Livestock Officer Md Abdullah Al Mamun Sagar said the animal had been examined and treated. “It is believed that it suffered an electric shock,” he said.
Chauddagram Upazila Forest Officer Md Shahin Alam said the animal was now in the department’s custody and was fully healthy. He said it would be released after instructions from higher authorities.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Shahadat Hossain said the animal had been handed over to the forest department after receiving necessary treatment and that the department would take the next steps.The rescued animal is described by officials as an endangered species.
