COP failing to deliver justice to climate-vulnerable countries: Shamsuddoha

The annual UN climate summit keeps failing to ensure justice given the Loss and Damage Fund (LDF) and the role of developed countries responsible most for the global climate change, said Center for Participatory Research and Development Chief Executive Md Shamsuddoha.

COP29, he said, has several key elements, with the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) being the first of them. However, despite adaptation, mitigation and LDF being the main factors of the most crucial climate change actions, the Fund has not been included in NCQG so far.

Emphassising on millions in climate finance, he said the countries at the COPs are denying accepting or setting a quantified figure for future climate finance goal.

He furthered that the LDF is based on the Paris Agreement which does not have any obligation for the developed countries. “Given the issue of justice, the Paris Agreement is not what can deliver justice to climate-vulnerable countries.”
