BAPEX is conducting a four-to-five-day production test at Sundalpur-4 to assess its gas reserve and capacity, with initial estimates suggesting output of 5-7 million cubic feet daily.

The presence of gas has been confirmed at the Sundalpur-4 evaluation-cum-development well in Bara Charigaon village of Nabipur Union under Senbag upazila of Noakhali.

The confirmation came last afternoon after drilling operations were completed and gas was flared at the wellhead, according to project officials.

Drilling at the well began on July 29 under the supervision of Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (BAPEX).

The well was drilled to a depth of 1,578 metres using directional drilling and Measurement While Drilling (MWD) technology, project sources said. Gas-bearing zones were identified at depths between 1,420 metres and 1,460 metres.

Although the well is located in Senbag, it was named Sundalpur-4 after the Sundalpur-1, Sundalpur-2 and Sundalpur-3 wells in neighbouring Companiganj, as it is part of the same underground gas field structure.

Md Mozammel Huq, project director of the Sundalpur-4 drilling project, said the presence of gas had been identified earlier and was confirmed on Tuesday after completion of drilling and successful flaring of the well.

A Drill Stem Test (DST) is currently underway, he said.

“The DST will continue for four to five days. After that, we will be able to determine the estimated gas reserve and the well’s production capacity,” Huq said.

Initial estimates indicate that the well may be capable of producing around 5-7 million cubic feet of gas per day. If confirmed, the gas will be supplied to the national grid through a pipeline, he added.
