Bangladesh and the Maldives have pledged closer cooperation on climate action, environmental protection and resilience-building, highlighting shared vulnerabilities and committing to joint initiatives, research, tree-planting campaigns and global climate advocacy.

Bangladesh and the Maldives have underscored the importance of strengthening climate diplomacy and expanding joint initiatives to address the adverse impacts of climate change, curb global warming and protect the environment.

The commitment was highlighted by Bangladesh High Commissioner to the Maldives Dr Md Nazmul Islam while participating in the World Environment Day 2026 celebrations and a tree-planting programme held at Central Park in Hulhumale to mark the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the Bangladesh High Commission in the Maldives on Monday.

The event was attended by Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Dr Ali Shareef, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of international organisations.

During an exchange of views with the Maldivian foreign minister, Dr Nazmul Islam said Bangladesh and the Maldives face similar extreme risks arising from sea-level rise, coastal erosion, biodiversity loss and global warming. He noted that such global challenges cannot be tackled by individual countries alone and stressed that effective partnerships and joint initiatives among climate-vulnerable nations are now essential.

The high commissioner highlighted Bangladesh’s extensive experience and achievements in disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, coastal protection, mangrove conservation and community-based environmental management.

He said Bangladesh is keen to work closely with the Maldives at both policy and strategic levels to enhance climate resilience and advance the global pursuit of climate justice.

Reaffirming Bangladesh’s full support for the Maldives’ ambitious Five Million Trees Project, Dr Nazmul Islam said the initiative, alongside Bangladesh’s ongoing national greening campaign targeting the plantation of nearly 250 million trees, reflects a shared vision for building an environmentally sustainable future.

He added that Bangladesh would share its experience, best practices and technical expertise to support the successful implementation of the Maldivian tree-planting initiative.

Both sides agreed that the protection of the environment and marine resources is directly linked to the lives and livelihoods of people in both countries.

They also expressed a strong commitment to working together in the future on climate research, environmental awareness programmes, joint tree-planting campaigns, capacity-building activities and coordinated engagement in regional and international climate forums.
