Bangladesh launches NexGen fellowship to develop future leaders

A new fellowship in Bangladesh aims to develop young professionals into future leaders through hands-on training, mentorship, and cross-sector placements addressing complex development and labour market challenges.

Bangladesh has launched a new leadership development initiative, the NexGen Graduate Fellowship, aimed at equipping young professionals with practical skills, cross-sector exposure and systems-based experience to address emerging labour market and development challenges.

The programme comes at a time when Bangladesh’s large youth population is transitioning from education to employment amid increasing demand for professionals capable of adapting to complex and rapidly changing economic and governance systems. The initiative targets graduates and early-career professionals aged 23 to 32 from the Dhaka Division and is designed to move participants beyond entry-level, execution-focused roles into strategic, policy-oriented and leadership positions.

Organisers describe the fellowship as a highly competitive programme intended to accelerate professional readiness and leadership capacity among young talent, with a strong emphasis on applied learning and real-world engagement.

Collaborative Framework for Systems-Based Innovation

The NexGen Graduate Fellowship is implemented through a partnership between JAAGO Foundation Trust and YouthNet Global under the Nagorikata Civic Engagement Fund programme. It is supported by the Embassy of Switzerland, Global Affairs Canada and the European Union and implemented by GFA Consulting Group.

Organisers say the initiative aims to develop a new generation of professionals capable of navigating complexity, working across systems and contributing to inclusive and sustainable development outcomes in Bangladesh and beyond.

The initiative is grounded in the Quadruple Helix model, an innovation framework that brings together government, industry, academia and civil society in collaborative problem solving. The model emphasises inclusive knowledge exchange and co-creation, ensuring that communities are not passive recipients but active contributors in shaping solutions to development challenges.

This approach is reflected in how fellows engage directly with institutions and community stakeholders while working across multiple sectors.

“NexGen is designed to move beyond conventional training,” said Sohanur Rahman, Executive Coordinator of YouthNet Global. “It prepares young professionals to work across systems, understand complexity and take responsibility in shaping solutions that respond to real societal needs through collaboration and action.”

Blended Learning and Practicum-Based Experience

The six-month fellowship combines structured learning with applied practice. The first three months consist of an intensive leadership immersion bootcamp focused on critical thinking, problem solving, communication and strategic decision making in complex and fast-changing environments.

This is followed by a three-month practicum phase, where fellows are placed within government agencies, private sector organisations, non-governmental organisations and academic institutions. Participants engage in real project work, contribute to solution design and support implementation processes.

Unlike conventional training programmes, the fellowship integrates participants into active decision-making environments, offering exposure and responsibility that typically requires years of professional experience.

Career Development and Cross-Sector Exposure

Beyond skills development, the programme offers mentorship from industry and policy leaders, internationally recognised certification and access to a cross-sector professional network.

Organisers say the fellowship is designed to support accelerated progression into leadership, policy and strategic roles across sectors, strengthening both individual career pathways and institutional capacity.

The programme also promotes collaboration between public, private and civil society actors in addressing national and regional development priorities.

Inclusive Participation and Access

The fellowship is open to eligible applicants from diverse academic backgrounds, with no specific discipline or CGPA requirement. Selection is based primarily on leadership potential, motivation and engagement in community or social initiatives.

Women, persons with disabilities, indigenous youth and gender-diverse applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

Selected fellows will not be required to pay any participation fee. However, the programme does not provide salaries or stipends during the fellowship period.
