Bangladesh Environment Department demolishes illegal brick kiln chimney

Bangladesh’s Environment Department fined an illegal Jamalpur brick kiln Tk300,000 and demolished its fixed chimney during a mobile court drive against environmentally harmful operations lacking official clearance.

Bangladesh’s Department of Environment has fined an illegal brick kiln 300,000 taka and demolished its environmentally harmful fixed chimney during a mobile court operation in Jamalpur for operating without environmental clearance.

The drive was conducted on Thursday afternoon by a mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Sajjad Hossain Ratul from the Department of Environment in Dhaka against a brick kiln named “Star Bricks.”

Authorities said the kiln had been operating without the required environmental clearance certificate. During the operation officials also tore down the fixed chimney, citing its harmful impact on the environment.

As the owner of the brick kiln was not present during the raid, the court instructed the establishment’s manager, Tapan Ahmed Ejaz, to pay the fine.

AKM Shamiul Alam Kursi, assistant director of the district Department of Environment, said there had been four brick kilns with fixed chimneys in Jamalpur. He added that the chimneys of three of those kilns have already been demolished.

Executive Magistrate Sajjad Hossain Ratul said the Department of Environment has been carrying out regular operations against illegal brick kilns across Bangladesh and that the crackdown will continue.
