Bangladesh and ICIMOD agreed to deepen cooperation on climate resilience, transboundary river management and regional environmental governance, advancing a mountain-to-delta approach to strengthen ecosystem protection and climate adaptation.
In a significant move to strengthen regional climate action, Bangladesh and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) have pledged to intensify their cooperation on climate resilience, transboundary river management and regional environmental governance.
The commitment was made during a high-level bilateral meeting in Bangkok on Thursday between Bangladesh’s Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Abdul Awal Mintoo, and ICIMOD Director General Pema Gyamtsho.
Strengthening Regional Cooperation
During the discussions, the ICIMOD Director General praised Bangladesh’s proactive engagement in regional environmental initiatives. He underscored the urgent need for enhanced cooperation to address the complex transboundary challenges linked to glacier-fed river systems.
Dr. Gyamtsho emphasized the need for a unified transboundary action plan for the sustainable management of shared water resources. He also sought Bangladesh’s active support for ICIMOD’s upcoming medium-term evaluation and strategic planning processes.
A Unified ‘Mountain-to-Delta’ Approach
A key focus of the meeting was the hydrological link between the Himalayas and the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta. Both sides reaffirmed the critical importance of a coordinated “mountain-to-delta” ecosystem management approach.
Minister Mintoo highlighted that since many of Bangladesh’s major rivers originate in neighboring countries, collaborative initiatives on transboundary water management, climate adaptation and ecosystem preservation are not only strategic but also essential for the country’s future.
Institutional Integration
As a testament to the deepening partnership, a proposal was tabled to designate the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change as the official National Focal Point for ICIMOD in Bangladesh. Minister Mintoo welcomed the proposal and assured the delegation that he would expedite the necessary administrative processes to formalize the designation.
The minister also confirmed his participation in the upcoming ICIMOD Board Meeting scheduled for September and pledged Bangladesh’s continued support for the organization’s medium-term action plans and broader regional initiatives.
Looking Ahead
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing satisfaction over their long-standing partnership and a firm resolve to further strengthen their collaboration. By aligning policies on environmental governance and climate resilience, Bangladesh and ICIMOD aim to set a precedent for sustainable resource management in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region and the downstream deltaic plains.
