A farmer found the python entangled while retrieving his fishing net from a paddy field. Following a local rescuer’s intervention, the snake was handed over and released into the nearby forest.
A nearly 10-foot-long python was rescued after becoming trapped in a fishing net placed in a paddy field in Sharankhola Upazila of Bagerhat District, officials and residents said.
The snake was found on Friday morning, July 10, in Lakurtala village. It had become entangled in a banned Chinese “duari” fishing net set by a local farmer to catch fish.
According to residents, farmer Milon Talukder placed the net in his paddy field on Thursday afternoon. When he went to retrieve it the following morning, he discovered the large python trapped inside.
He immediately contacted local snake rescuer Shamsu Talukder, who arrived at the site despite heavy rain and carefully freed the reptile from the net.
The rescued python was later handed over to Forest Department officials and released into the Sundarbans near the Sharankhola Range Office.
Md Khalilur Rahman, station officer of the Sharankhola Station under the Sundarbans East Forest Division, confirmed the incident.
“The python was rescued from a Chinese duari net placed in a paddy field. After the rescuers brought it to us, it was released into the Sundarbans near the range office,” he said.
The python was approximately 10 feet long and weighed an estimated seven to eight kilograms, the forest official added.
Chinese duari nets are prohibited because their tightly woven mesh indiscriminately traps fish, reptiles and other aquatic wildlife, posing a serious threat to local biodiversity.
