Sonagazi solar plant boosts grid stability, powers industry growth in Bangladesh

A 75MW solar plant in Sonagazi is boosting grid stability, reducing outages and supporting industrial expansion in Bangladesh’s economic zones while advancing the country’s transition toward cleaner, sustainable energy systems.

A 75-megawatt solar power plant in southeastern Bangladesh is improving national grid stability while supporting rapid industrial growth in emerging economic zones, officials said.

The Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh PLC built Sonagazi Solar Power Plant, financed by the World Bank and the government, has been supplying electricity since April 2024.

Located in Sonagazi upazila’s Purba Borodhali and Charchandia areas in Feni district, the plant has a capacity of 75 MW (AC) and 96.34 MW (DC). Electricity is transmitted via a 230 kV line to the Mirsarai grid substation operated by the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh.

Officials said the project has improved grid stability, strengthened voltage performance and helped reduce transmission losses. It has also eased pressure on the national system, contributing to a reduction in load shedding in industrial and residential areas.

The impact is most visible in economic zones managed by the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority, particularly in the expanding industrial hub of Mirsarai. More consistent electricity supply has improved factory efficiency and encouraged new industrial investment.

Nuruddin Md Farhad, executive engineer at the Mirsarai grid substation, said the solar plant has enhanced the ability to supply uninterrupted electricity to factories in the economic zone, supporting smoother industrial operations.

BEZA Executive Member Saleh Ahmed said electricity demand in the zones is rising steadily with new industries. “This solar power plant is helping meet that growing demand,” he said, adding that additional solar projects are under consideration to support future expansion.

Project officials also said the plant is contributing to broader local economic activity, including opportunities for small and cottage industries and employment generation in surrounding communities.

Md Mohiuddin, executive engineer of the Sonagazi Solar Power Plant, said the project is supporting Bangladesh’s transition toward cleaner energy by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.

With its role in reinforcing grid reliability and supporting industrial expansion, the Sonagazi Solar Power Plant is being seen as an important step in Bangladesh’s push for sustainable and inclusive growth.
