Rangamati bans fishing in Kaptai Lake from April 24 to protect breeding

Rangamati authorities have banned fishing in Kaptai Lake from April 24 to protect breeding fish, suspending harvest, transport and sales, with strict enforcement and mobile court drives planned.

The Rangamati district administration has imposed a ban on fishing in Kaptai Lake from 12:00 am on April 24 until further notice to ensure the safe breeding, reproduction and normal growth of fish.

Under the restriction, all kinds of fish harvesting, transportation and marketing will remain suspended, the administration said, warning that strict legal action will be taken against anyone who violates the order.

The decision was taken at a meeting held yesterday in the conference room of the Rangamati deputy commissioner’s office, where officials discussed steps to protect fish stocks in the lake during the breeding period.

Participants at the meeting said the administration would mark the restriction along both river and road routes to make sure people are informed about the ban.

They also said mobile court drives in Kaptai Lake would continue to prevent illegal fishing during the restriction.

Among those present were senior scientific officer Ishtiaq Haidar of the Fisheries Research Institute, Commander Md Foyez Al Karim of the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation, Assistant Superintendent of Naval Police for the Chattogram region Abu Md Dilwar Hasan Inam, Rangamati Additional Superintendent of Police Md Jasim Uddin Chowdhury, District Fisheries Officer Mizanur Rahman and representatives of fishers and fishing communities.
