Moulvibazar prepares list of farmers and fishers affected by floods, says DC

Authorities in Moulvibazar are preparing lists of flood-affected farmers and fishers after continuous rain and hill runoff damaged boro fields in haor areas, prompting inspections and emergency response efforts.

Authorities in northeastern Moulvibazar are preparing a list of farmers and fishers affected by waterlogging in the district’s haor areas after continuous rain and hill runoff caused extensive damage to boro paddy, the district administrator said after visiting a flooded wetland zone on Tuesday.

District Administrator Touhiduzzaman Pavel visited Kawadighi Haor in Rajnagar upazila on May 12 to inspect the situation of affected farmers and review government assistance efforts on the ground.

He was accompanied during the visit by Rajnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Bipul Sikdar, District Fisheries Officer Arif Hossain and Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Jalal Uddin.

During the inspection, officials checked on the ground whether the list of affected farmers in the haor areas was being prepared properly. The district administrator also spoke to farmers living along the haor to learn about their current condition, crop losses and the support they needed.

He heard farmers’ views on the causes behind the rising water, possible measures to protect crops and ways to reduce losses in the future. He also asked whether the names of affected farmers had been included in the list. Those whose names were not included were advised to contact the relevant upazila administration officer.

Pavel later visited the Kashempur pump house, which is being operated to keep water drainage activities running in Kawadighi Haor. There, he discussed the drainage situation with the officials concerned and instructed them to strengthen the work further.

He also visited the Rajnagar Upazila Complex. During the visit, fish feed was distributed to two affected fishers.

“The situation in the haor areas is being monitored round the clock and work is under way to prepare a list of affected farmers and fishers,” Pavel said.

He added that all relevant departments had also been instructed to ensure the necessary support.
