Man held in Chattogram over illegal bird trade, two parrots rescued

A young man was detained in Chattogram for allegedly trading protected birds, with authorities rescuing two parrots during a raid and filing a case under wildlife protection laws.

A young man was detained in Chattogram on Wednesday for allegedly trading protected birds, as authorities rescued two parrots during a raid in the city.

The detainee, Shahen Alam hails from Kazirhat under Chandgaon Police Station.

Officials from the Wildlife Division of the Forest Department said the operation was carried out around 2:00pm near Zaman Hotel in the Muradpur area under Panchlaish Police Station, acting on a tip-off about the illegal buying and selling of birds. The suspect was caught red-handed with two parrots.

Confirming the incident, Chattogram Wildlife and Nature Conservation Officer Dipannita Bhattacharjee told that the detainee admitted during initial questioning to being involved in the purchase and sale of wildlife for a long time.

“A case has been filed under Section 41(3) of the law, which is punishable under Section 44. The accused has been produced before the court, while a formal forest case report will be submitted through the relevant authorities,” she said.

Authorities said the rescued birds are listed as protected species under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Ordinance 2026, making their trade illegal.
