Man arrested after PM intervenes in brutal stray dog attack in Bogura

A Bogura man was arrested after the prime minister ordered action over the alleged brutal attack on a stray dog, which was rescued, treated by veterinarians and is recovering.

A man has been arrested on the instructions of Bangladesh’s prime minister after a stray dog was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon and left critically injured in a roadside drain in Bogura, a major commercial city in northern Bangladesh, the Prime Minister’s Press Wing confirmed.

The incident took place in the Kanchgari area of Bogura, a city located in Bogura District in the Rajshahi Division.

Earlier on Monday, Md Emran Hossain, convening member of the Bogura chapter of the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), filed a case over the incident. The accused has been identified as Md Swapan, a furniture trader and resident of the Kanchgari Pukurpar area.

According to the complaint, Emran Hossain went to a lane on the western side of Independent Hospital in Kanchgari after receiving information by mobile phone around noon on Monday. There, he found a seriously injured black-and-white stray dog lying in a drain.

With the assistance of two local residents, SM Sadikul Islam and Rafid Yasad, the dog was rescued and taken to a veterinary treatment centre in Jaleshwaritala for medical care.

The complainant said that after being informed of the incident, officials from the Upazila Livestock Office along with a coordinated medical team from the District Livestock Department provided treatment to the injured animal. Following medical care, the dog showed signs of recovery and its condition improved.

The first information report further alleged that inquiries at the scene indicated the accused, Swapan, had attacked the stray dog with a sharp object causing severe injuries.

The Prime Minister’s Press Wing confirmed that one person had been arrested following the prime minister’s directive over the incident.
