An injured monkey in Jhikargacha amazes locals by seeking treatment on its own, visiting a health complex and police station before calmly receiving care at a veterinary hospital.

An injured monkey stunned veterinary staff in southwestern Bangladesh after it appeared to seek medical care on its own, arriving at a government animal hospital following visits to a health complex and even a police station, officials said.

The unusual incident took place on Sunday afternoon at the veterinary hospital under the livestock office in Jhikargacha Upazila, where doctors and staff witnessed the animal’s unexpected behaviour firsthand.

According to Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Masuma Akhter, the monkey had a deep wound on the back of its body caused by a sharp weapon. It is suspected that someone attacked the animal, after which it began searching for treatment.

Before reaching the veterinary facility, the monkey had reportedly visited the Jhikargacha Upazila Health Complex and even entered the local police station, apparently in search of help.

Describing the incident, Dr Akhter said the monkey first climbed onto a table in the hospital’s treatment shed. “Not satisfied there, it entered the pharmacy room, opened bottles of medicines, and sniffed and even tasted some of them,” she said.

When staff prepared to treat it, the monkey calmed down and appeared to cooperate, sitting quietly as if it understood the situation.

Veterinarians cleaned the wound using povidone-iodine, during which the animal remained completely still. Doctors noted that throughout the process, the monkey behaved with an unusual level of awareness, likening its composure to that of a speech-impaired person.
