The Forest Department filed a case under the Forest Act after recovering venison and hunting-related equipment during a late-night operation in the Sundarbans.
Forest officials have seized 70 kilograms of venison, two deer heads, a boat and other equipment from the Shakbaria River in the Sundarbans, while suspected poachers fled after detecting the presence of the authorities.
The seizure was made at around 11:00 pm last Sunday during a special operation near the No. 06 Koyra Polton area along the Shakbaria River in Compartment K/36 of the protected Sundarbans.
The operation was conducted by the Kashiabad Forest Station under the Khulna Range of the Sundarbans West Forest Division.
Officials recovered 70kg of venison, two deer heads, a boat, a machete and a 10-foot-long sheet of polythene during the operation, which was led by Kashiabad Forest Station officer and Deputy Ranger Md Nasir Uddin.
According to the Forest Department, Nasir Uddin and accompanying staff launched the operation after receiving confidential information.
The suspected poachers fled after sensing the presence of forest officials. A search of the boat subsequently led to the recovery of the venison, deer heads, boat, machete and polythene sheet.
Confirming the incident, Nasir Uddin said: “Acting on confidential information, I conducted the operation with accompanying staff. The poachers fled after sensing our presence. We searched the boat and seized 70kg of venison, two deer heads, one boat, one machete and a 10-foot-long sheet of polythene.”
He added that the seized venison had been buried and destroyed on the instructions of the court and that a case had been filed under the Forest Act.
