Forest department seizes 150 kg of shrimp, poison bottles and boat in Sundarbans raid

Forest officials say suspects escaped before they could be arrested as a night patrol recovered shrimp, poison and equipment allegedly used in illegal activities inside the Sundarbans, with a court case now filed.

Bangladesh’s Forest Department seized 150 kilograms of shrimp, two bottles of poison and a boat during an operation in a river near the Jorshing Harejkhali locality under the Khulna Range of the Sundarbans West Forest Division.

According to officials, the operation was carried out late on Saturday night by a Forest Department smart team along with personnel from the Kashiyabad Forest Station and the Bajbaja Forest Patrol Outpost. During the raid in the river adjacent to the Jorshing Harejkhali locality, officers seized 150 kilograms of shrimp, two bottles of poison, a boat and other equipment found on board.

Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Deputy Ranger at the Kashiyabad Forest Station, said, “During our regular patrol, we conducted an operation in the river near the Jorshing Harejkhali locality. We seized 150 kilograms of shrimp, one boat and two bottles of poison from the boat.”

He added, “The miscreants fled into the nearby locality after noticing the presence of our speedboat and Hong.”

He further said that, under a court order, the seized shrimp and the bottles of poison had been buried and destroyed. A case has been filed in court under the Forest Act in connection with the incident.
