Dhaka’s animal welfare groups have launched a citywide effort to promote humane stray dog management through vaccination and visible identification measures.
A programme to vaccinate stray dogs against rabies and fit them with collars for easier identification has begun in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.
The initiative was launched by the Dhaka Animal Welfare Alliance Trust (DAWAT) with support from Gulshan Society, a community organisation in the capital’s Gulshan area.
The organisations began the campaign on Friday morning at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan, where stray dogs were vaccinated and fitted with collars.
The organisers said they plan to gradually bring stray dogs across Dhaka under the vaccination and identification programme.
The campaign was inaugurated by Omar Sadat, president of Gulshan Society and DAWAT, and Nazneen Haque Akbar, secretary general of DAWAT.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Omar Sadat said, “Vaccination will help protect both animals and humans. If collars are put on, the relevant authorities and local residents will be able to easily identify the vaccinated dogs.”
He described stray dogs as part of the urban community.
“A humane city does not respond to dogs and cats with fear or cruelty, but rather responds through responsibility and practical initiatives,” Omar Sadat said.
Nazneen Haque Akbar called on city residents to show compassion towards animals.
Among others present at the event were Gulshan Society Secretary General Mojibur Rahman Mridha and Joint Secretary General Joya Kabir.
