CU student council leads day-long ‘Clean Campus’ drive

The Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) on Sunday organised a day-long clean-up campaign across the campus, aiming to make the hilltop university cleaner and more environmentally friendly.

The initiative, titled “Clean Campus Day with CUCSU,” mobilised students across 12 key locations, including the university railway station, new and old arts buildings, science and biology faculties, Shaheed Minar, Buddhijibi Square, female and male dormitory areas, the botanical garden and the CUCSU premises.

Eight student and environmental groups, including Green Voice, Our Green Campus, Career Club, CAB, CUSS, Three-R, CUES and PDF, joined the effort.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Mohammad Yahya Akhtar attended the programme as chief guest, while Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Dr Md Kamal Uddin presided. CUCSU leaders, hall representatives, faculty members, student volunteers and environmental organisations also took part.

“When I took charge, the campus was littered. Now it has improved tremendously, comparable to the environment of a cantonment,” the VC said, praising students for keeping the campus vibrant. “Cleanliness is not just about removing waste; it is a culture we must spread everywhere.”

Pro-VC Kamal Uddin thanked CUCSU for organising the campaign, saying, “We want students to take responsibility for a clean campus and care for their health and environment.”

CUCSU General Secretary Saeed Bin Habib said the clean-up drive was a symbolic action to send a broader message. “Cleanliness is not only the job of the state. It is everyone’s duty,” he said.

Tahssina Rahman, CUCSU’s Social Welfare and Environment Secretary, added that the event aimed to remind the community that waste management is a collective responsibility. “We generate the waste; we must also take responsibility for keeping the campus clean,” she said.
