The University of Chittagong’s Faculty of Biology planted 400 saplings of 40 species, including 14 rare and endangered ones, aiming to conserve biodiversity, promote research, and strengthen campus greenery.
The Faculty of Biology at the University of Chittagong (CU) has taken an initiative to conserve biodiversity and promote greenery by planting 400 saplings of 40 species, including 14 rare and endangered ones, said a press release.
The plantation program was inaugurated on Monday (15 September) morning with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yahya Akhter, planting a Wild Almond Tree sapling at the faculty premises.
“Our campus is blessed with natural beauty and has ample scope for conservation and afforestation. I appreciate the Faculty of Biology for this excellent initiative,” the Vice-Chancellor said during the event.
Professor Dr. Mohammad Shamim Uddin Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic), noted, “Due to infrastructure development and research projects, many trees are often cut down but not replanted in equal numbers. This is why more plantation initiatives are crucial.”
Professor Dr. Md. Golam Kibria, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, highlighted the academic importance of the initiative: “Research often requires rare plant species, which are difficult to find. This program aims to conserve such species and strengthen green coverage on campus.”
The ceremony was attended by several department heads, including Professor Dr. Rasheda Chowdhury (Zoology), Professor Dr. Kazi Mohammad Mejbhaul Alam (Botany), Professor Dr. Mohammad Mahbub Morshed (Geography & Environmental Studies), Professor Dr. Mohammad Saidul Islam (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology), Professor Dr. Ferdousi Ali (Microbiology) and others.
