Unstable rainfall, drought and shifting water levels are disturbing the fragile wetland conditions that support moorhen nesting, feeding and chick survival despite its wide range.
The Common Moorhen may be one of the world’s more familiar wetland birds, but the growing instability of the marshes, ponds and waterways it depends on is putting increasing pressure on its food, shelter and breeding grounds.
Recognisable by its dark plumage, white flank stripe and bright red bill tipped with yellow, the Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) lives across large parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. It thrives in freshwater wetlands with dense vegetation, including marshes, ponds, lakes, canals and slow-moving rivers.
But climate change is altering the water systems on which birds such as the moorhen depend. Rising temperatures, greater evaporation and changes in rainfall, flooding and water levels can transform freshwater ecosystems, according to assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
For the Common Moorhen, those changes can strike at the heart of its breeding cycle.
The bird usually builds its nest among dense vegetation close to or over shallow water. Stable water levels provide cover from predators and access to aquatic plants, insects and other small creatures that form its diet. Research on Common Moorhen breeding has found that water depth beneath nests is among the habitat characteristics associated with nesting and reproductive success.
Extreme rainfall can create the opposite problem. Sudden rises in water can inundate low nests, destroying eggs or exposing newly hatched chicks. Research on breeding waterbirds has shown nest flooding can become a major cause of reproductive failure during heavy rainfall events.
Drought brings another threat. As wetlands shrink, shallow feeding areas disappear and aquatic vegetation can decline. Birds may be pushed into smaller remaining patches of habitat where competition for food and nesting space increases.
Climate change can therefore create a difficult balance for the moorhen: too little water reduces feeding and nesting habitat, while too much water at the wrong time can wash away nests.
The Common Moorhen is still classified globally as Least Concern, reflecting its enormous geographic range. However, IUCN information indicates that its global population trend is decreasing, highlighting why widespread species should not automatically be considered free from environmental pressure.
Protecting natural wetlands, maintaining vegetation along waterways and avoiding sudden human-driven changes in water levels can give moorhens and other waterbirds more room to cope with increasingly unpredictable conditions.
For a bird whose life is tied so closely to the boundary between land and water, the climate crisis is increasingly a crisis of finding the right amount of water in the right place at the right time.
