Bangladesh’s Human Safety Foundation has secured UN ECOSOC Special Consultative Status, enabling the NGO to contribute to global discussions on sustainable development, human rights, education, healthcare and climate action.
Bangladesh-based non-governmental organisation Human Safety Foundation (HSF) has been granted Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), allowing it to engage with the UN and its subsidiary bodies on a range of international development and human rights issues.
In a message, ECOSOC said Human Safety Foundation was awarded the status after the United Nations Economic and Social Council approved the recommendation of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations on June 10, 2026. The council also congratulated the organisation on the achievement.
The consultative status enables an organisation to work with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies through various mechanisms. It also allows accredited organisations to engage with the United Nations Human Rights Council and under specific conditions participate in certain meetings of the United Nations General Assembly, other intergovernmental bodies and the United Nations Secretariat.
Human Safety Foundation was established in 2009 by a group of young graduates from the University of Dhaka with the goal of serving humanity and improving the lives of disadvantaged people across Bangladesh. The organisation received registration from the Joint Stock Companies in the same year and was later registered with the NGO Affairs Bureau in 2022.
Since its establishment, HSF has focused on providing education to underprivileged children. It initially launched floating schools at four locations in the capital before establishing permanent schools in Hazaribagh and Uttara to provide a better learning environment.
A total of 453 disadvantaged children are currently receiving free education from pre-primary to grade five at the two schools.
The organisation also operates medical camps in Bogura, Manikganj, Narail, Mymensingh and Habiganj where residents of remote rural areas receive free healthcare consultations from MBBS-qualified doctors.
Since 2023, more than 180,000 people have received medical advice through these camps, with women and children accounting for around 70 percent of the beneficiaries.
HSF is also working to promote climate change awareness and environmental conservation through public awareness campaigns and tree plantation programmes. The organisation has been arranging events at schools to encourage young people to take an active role in protecting the climate.
Following the recognition, HSF Chairman Advocate M A Mukit congratulated the organisation’s officers and employees on securing the prestigious UN consultative status.
