Officials reviewed environment ministry projects under the FY2026-27 development programme, with ministers calling for quicker approvals and public-focused outcomes within the government’s current term.
Bangladesh will revise ongoing environment projects to bring them in line with the government’s election manifesto, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, MP, said on Monday.
The minister made the remarks while chairing an inter-ministerial meeting between the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Ministry of Planning at the environment ministry’s conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka.
The meeting, held on 20 July, reviewed ongoing and unapproved new projects included in the annual development programme for the 2026-2027 financial year.
Mintoo said new projects would be taken up as quickly as possible so their outcomes could become visible during the tenure of the current government.
“The projects will be undertaken in such a way that they reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people,” he said. “This government is committed to implementing its promises.”
Speaking as a special guest, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam, MP, said the prime minister was regularly monitoring all issues.
He advised that new projects should be taken up with consideration for ensuring the maximum benefit for the public.
Md Jonaed Abdur Rahim Saki, MP, state minister at the Ministry of Planning, took part in the review of the environment ministry’s ongoing and unapproved new projects.
Speaking as a special guest, the planning state minister said projects of all ministries were being reviewed on the instructions of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
“The highest number of projects must be taken up this year,” he said. “Because the projects taken up now will be completed within the tenure of this government.”
He also offered various suggestions on taking up new projects as quickly as possible.
The meeting was attended by Dr Fahmida Khanom, acting secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Dr Md Saimum Parvez, special assistant to the prime minister on environment, forest and climate change; Md Mahmudul Hossain Khan, member and secretary of the Agriculture, Water Resources and Rural Institutions Division; Dr Monzur Hossain, member and secretary of the General Economics Division; additional secretaries of the ministry; heads of various agencies; project directors and officials at different levels.
