Abdul Awal Mintoo appointed as Bangladesh environment minister

BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo has been appointed Bangladesh’s environment minister after taking oath as a lawmaker, marking a key political development following the 13th parliamentary election.

BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo has been appointed full minister of environment, forest and climate change after taking oath as a lawmaker in Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary election.

Mintoo was sworn in on Tuesday at about 10:45 am at the oath-taking room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin administered the oath to the newly elected members of parliament. The ministers were sworn in afterward.

The veteran politician won the Feni-3 constituency in the 13th national election. He is one of the newly elected BNP lawmakers who took oath following the polls.

Mintoo previously served as an adviser to the late BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. He is also a director of National Bank and General Life Insurance and serves as chief executive officer of Multimode Group.

Before joining the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Mintoo was involved in Awami League politics. He later aligned himself with the BNP and was appointed adviser to Khaleda Zia.

Ahead of Bangladesh’s January 5, 2014 general election, he was arrested. After securing bail, he was named senior joint convener of Dhaka Metropolitan BNP.
