Students pledged to plant trees, reduce plastic use and follow climate-conscious habits after sessions on leadership, volunteering, biodiversity, waste management and sustainable lifestyles.
A youth leadership and climate literacy workshop was held on Thursday at Daulatpur Bahumukhi High School in Karnaphuli upazila of Chattogram with 235 students taking part in sessions on environmental protection, climate change awareness and youth leadership.
The “Youth Leadership and Climate Literacy Workshop” was organised by Youth People of Bangladesh with support from Young Power in Social Action.
Karnaphuli Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Ridowanul Islam attended the event as chief guest.
“Protecting the environment is not only the responsibility of the government, but of every citizen,” the UNO said. “Small awareness initiatives by students can play an important role in building a clean and liveable Bangladesh.”
He urged students to keep their school premises, homes and surrounding areas clean, plant trees, reduce plastic use and play an active role in addressing the adverse impacts of climate change.
The event was chaired by Nasir Uddin Ahmed, head teacher of Daulatpur Bahumukhi High School. Addressing the students, he said families and society, alongside educational institutions, have an important collective role in shaping the present generation into environmentally conscious, humane and responsible citizens.
Two thematic sessions were held during the workshop.
The “Youth Leadership” session was conducted by Sidratul Muntaha, chief executive of Youth People of Bangladesh. He discussed leadership qualities among young people, the importance of volunteering, social responsibility and the role of youth in community development.
The “Climate Literacy” session was conducted by Khadija Akter, environment and climate secretary of Youth People of Bangladesh. She gave students practical ideas on the causes and impacts of climate change, environmental protection, plastic pollution, waste management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable lifestyles.
Three teachers from the school, along with executive and general members of Youth People of Bangladesh, were present at the event.
At the end of the workshop, participating students took an oath to protect the environment, maintain cleanliness, plant trees and follow a climate-conscious lifestyle.
According to the organisers, such initiatives will play an important role in increasing environmental responsibility among young people and developing effective leadership to address climate change.
