Journey of Porag, a climate rights activist with global reach

He founded a global initiative called “Teach the Parent,” putting young people in the educators’ seat for providing climate education to parents

Amanullah Porag, a 24-year-old climate rights activist from Bangladesh, views the climate crisis as a human rights crisis.

Currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Environment and Development Studies at the United International University, Porag cultivated a passion for voluntarism and activism at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and joined the youth organisation Lal Sabuj Society.

From there, Porag found his knack for climate action and environmental activism, and he never had to look back ever since.

From Lal Sabuj Society, Porag joined the international organisation Mock COP – a climate education focused institution that works with students, teachers, parents, and politicians to spread climate education.

After collaborating with Mock COP as a volunteer for a year, Porag joined Mock COP as one of their six global campaign coordinators. There, he founded an initiative called “Teach the Parent,” putting young people in the educators’ seat for providing climate education to parents.

This initiative was launched in one hundred countries.

From the COVID-19 crisis till today, there have been challenges in the field of climate change mitigation.

Coming from a country that suffers the impacts of climate change every day, the key challenge in the field of activism is to protect people and their families from the crisis.

Plagued by lack of resources, inadequate access to information, inadequate support from the government and other relevant stakeholders, Porag and his like-minded peers continue the good fight to this day.

Porag now works professionally with an INGO named 350.org as the South Asia Mobilisations Coordinator. In his role, Porag mobilises and provides support to grassroots youth organisations from South Asia to build their movements for climate Justice.

As a youth activist, Porag focuses on meaningful youth engagement in the NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) processes.

Porag serves as the NDC contact point of YOUNGO, which is the official children and youth constituency of UNFCCC. In this role, he brings global youth into the climate processes for youth advocacy and youth engagement in the NDC process.

Porag works with youths from over 150 countries to ensure their meaningful engagement in the NDC processes. He has also worked with the COP29 Presidency Youth Climate Champion Team to bring in young people in the COP processes more meaningfully.

Porag is also a steering committee member of UNDP Climate Promise global steering committee, where he brings youth perspectives in Climate Promises support programme for the countries.

To bring in more Bangladeshi youth in Bangladesh’s NDC process, Porag founded a youth-led multi stakeholder platform named Youth4NDCs.

Youth4NDCs focuses on bringing in well-informed youth in Bangladesh’s NDC process through capacity building, advocacy, and stakeholder consultations to demand well-informed policy recommendations.

Porag has attended international climate conferences such as COP28, COP27, 5th Asia Pacific Ministerial Forum, Asia-Pacific Climate week 2023 and more to ensure that youth voices are heard in the center stage of climate decision making. He believes that young people have the power to bring about a positive change in society.
