Flash floods hit Mymensingh border areas, damage roads, cropland and homes

Flash floods triggered by heavy rain and upstream hill runoff inundated over 20 villages in Mymensingh, stranding families and damaging roads, cropland and homes across Haluaghat and Dhobaura upazilas.

More than 20 villages in two upazilas of Mymensingh were inundated by flash floods on Wednesday after heavy overnight rain and hill runoff from upstream, leaving more than a hundred families stranded and damaging roads, cropland and homes.

In Haluaghat, flash flooding hit three unions, Gazirbhita, Bhubankura and Haluaghat Sadar, after persistent heavy rain since last night and water flowing in through the border, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Faisal Ahmed told The Climate Watch on Wednesday.

The affected villages include Majrakura, Kumargati, Mohishleti, Achkipara, Telikhali, Koraitoli, Gazirbhita, Boalmara, Dumnikura, Surjapur, Sumoniara, Katalmari, Gubrakura, Monikura, Rangrapara and Kalinikanda.

He said parts of two important earthen roads had collapsed and cropland and homesteads in border areas had gone under water.

In Dhobaura, a flood protection embankment broke in the Gamaritola area of the Netai river on Wednesday afternoon as continuous heavy rain since morning and hill runoff from upstream worsened the flooding.

Dhobaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Mosharraf Hossain told The Climate Watch that the unions of Gamaritola, Ghoshgaon and South Maizpara were the worst affected.

He added that agricultural officials had been instructed to assess damage to boro paddy and other crops.

The flooding has left more than a hundred families stranded across the two upazilas, while submerged fields and homes have added to the suffering in the affected areas.
