Bangladesh, US pledge cooperation on climate, biodiversity goals

Bangladesh and the United States reaffirm cooperation on climate action, biodiversity conservation and green economy initiatives, highlighting the need for technical support, investment and joint efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Bangladesh’s environment minister Abdul Awal Mintoo and US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen on Sunday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on climate action, biodiversity conservation and building a green economy.

The pledge came during a courtesy meeting held at the minister’s office, where both sides discussed a range of issues of mutual interest, including achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and enhancing climate resilience.

State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam was also present at the meeting alongside senior officials from the ministry and representatives from the US embassy.

During the talks, Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo highlighted the need for stronger international collaboration to bolster Bangladesh’s efforts in forest conservation and climate change adaptation. He sought US support particularly in waste management, water pollution control and air pollution reduction.

He stressed the importance of technical assistance, training programmes, capacity building and investment to address environmental challenges effectively.

US Ambassador Brent T. Christensen underscored the importance of coordinated initiatives between the two countries on issues of shared interest. He also emphasized enhancing bilateral cooperation in forest conservation and combating wildlife trafficking.

Both sides expressed their resolve to work jointly towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, conserving biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience and advancing a green economy.

Officials present at the meeting included the secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, additional secretaries for environment and for pollution control and legal affairs, as well as the political and economic counsellor of the US embassy.
