Bangladesh and Germany sign €21.77m for development

Bangladesh and Germany signed €21.77m in GIZ grants for five projects boosting renewables, energy efficiency, green cooling, industrial safety training and support for climate-displaced women and host communities nationwide today.

Bangladesh and Germany have signed grant agreements totaling €21.77 million to support five development projects that advance climate action, energy efficiency and social empowerment. The agreements were formalized at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) in Dhaka, with ERD Secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddique representing Bangladesh and Heinrich-Juergen Schilling, country director of GIZ Dhaka, signing for Germany.

The projects, funded through the German development agency GIZ, include the Policy Advisory for Promoting Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (PAP II). With a €9 million grant, this project will be implemented by the Power Division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2029. It aims to strengthen institutional, economic and human resource capacity to support a socially just and environmentally sustainable energy transition in Bangladesh.

The Strengthening Urban Integration Capacities of Internally Displaced Persons and Supporting Host Communities (INTEGRATE) project will run from 1 October 2023 to 30 September 2027 with a €4.8 million grant. It will empower women, including persons with disabilities, who have been displaced by climate-induced disasters. The project is implemented by the Department of Social Services under the Ministry of Social Welfare.

The Professional Education in Industrial and Environmental Safety (PRECISE) project is allocated €7 million and will be managed by the Directorate of Technical Education and the Bangladesh Technical Education Board under the Ministry of Education. Running from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2029, it focuses on strengthening the country’s technical and vocational education and training sector, particularly in industrial and environmental safety.

The Green Room Air-Conditioning (GRACE) project, implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2028 with a €0.8 million grant, aims to promote climate-friendly and energy-efficient air-conditioning systems, supporting Bangladesh’s sustainable cooling and energy policies.

The Digital Skills to Succeed in Asia (DS2S) project has received an additional €0.175 million grant and will run until December 2026. It focuses on building digital skills to strengthen workforce readiness in the region.

These agreements reflect the strong partnership between Bangladesh and Germany in addressing climate change, advancing energy transition and promoting socially inclusive development. By supporting renewable energy, energy efficiency and disaster-affected communities, these projects reinforce Bangladesh’s commitment to sustainable and equitable growth.
