Authorities demolished illegal structure built on canal in Rangunia

Rangunia authorities demolished an illegal structure built on a roadside canal after imposing a Tk 270,000 fine, aiming to restore natural water flow and prevent waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon.

Authorities in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram demolished an illegal structure built on a flowing roadside canal after earlier imposing a financial penalty for obstructing its natural water flow, officials said on Tuesday.

The eviction drive was carried out Tuesday morning in the Charabottola area of Chandraghona-Kadamtali union by the upazila administration led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Debabrata Das.

Officials from the Bangladesh Water Development Board were also present during the operation, including Sub-Divisional Engineer Shamsul Arefin of the Chattogram office.

According to the upazila administration, the structure had been built by occupying part of the canal and obstructing its normal flow. On February 27, a mobile court fined a person Tk 270,000 for constructing the illegal installation that blocked the canal.

After the penalty was imposed, authorities removed the structure to restore the canal.

Local residents said the encroachment had raised fears of waterlogging in the area during the monsoon season. They expressed hope that the removal of the structure would reduce the risk of future waterlogging.
