China ready to launch the Teesta River project in Bangladesh

China says it is ready to begin the long-pending Teesta River project, highlighting stronger water cooperation and deepening strategic ties with Bangladesh without third-party involvement.

China has expressed its readiness to begin work on the long-discussed Teesta River project in Bangladesh, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen said on Sunday.

“If the Bangladesh government decides, China can start work immediately,” he told reporters at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka.

The Teesta project, a critical initiative for water management, agriculture and regional cooperation, has been under discussion for years. Its successful implementation is seen as a key step toward sustainable development and deeper ties between the two nations.

Ambassador Yao also stressed that China seeks direct, interference-free cooperation with Bangladesh and other South Asian nations. “China does not want any third-party involvement in our relations. If relations with any country become a target of a third party, it will fail,” he said.

He expressed optimism that ongoing collaboration would take China-Bangladesh relations to a new height, reinforcing trust and partnership in the region.
