The one-year contractual appointment gives Tipu Grade-2 status to oversee BCCT-funded climate projects as Bangladesh seeks stronger resilience and more accountable use of climate resources.
Bangladesh has appointed ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Kazi Rownaqul Islam Tipu as the Managing Director (MD) of the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust (BCCT), a key government institution responsible for financing climate adaptation and resilience initiatives.
The appointment was announced through a government notification issued on Thursday (23 July), signed by Md. Golam Rabbani, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, on behalf of the President.
According to the notification, Tipu has been appointed on a contractual basis for one year as the Managing Director of BCCT.
Established under the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Act, BCCT manages government funding for climate-related projects across the country. The trust supports initiatives focused on climate adaptation, disaster resilience, ecosystem protection and reducing the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities.
The appointment comes as Bangladesh continues to face severe climate challenges, including rising sea levels, coastal erosion, extreme heat, floods and increasing climate-induced displacement. As one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, Bangladesh has been working to strengthen adaptation efforts and improve the effective use of climate finance.
The Managing Director of BCCT plays a crucial role in overseeing the implementation of climate projects funded through the trust and ensuring coordination among government agencies and stakeholders.
Tipu currently serves as the Assistant Secretary for Environment and Forestry Affairs of the BNP’s Central Executive Committee. He is also the convener of the party’s conference preparation committees in Pirojpur and Barguna districts.
A former Vice-President (VP) of the Jagannath University Students’ Union, formerly known as Jagannath College Students’ Union, Tipu has been involved in student and political activities for several years.
Tipu’s appointment places him at the centre of Bangladesh’s climate finance and adaptation efforts at a time when the country is seeking stronger climate resilience measures and greater accountability in the management of climate resources.
