Poison blamed for deaths of 3,000 broiler chickens at farm in Thakurgaon

A poultry farmer in Thakurgaon alleges poisoning killed 3,000 chickens, causing heavy losses, as police await a formal complaint to begin an investigation into the incident.

A poultry farm owner in Thakurgaon has alleged that poison was used to kill 3,000 broiler chickens at his farm in Sadar upazila, police said on Monday.

The incident took place on Monday morning at Abu Sayeed Poultry Farm in Khekidanga village under the Bhelarhat area of Akhanagar union, Officer-in-Charge Md Badiuzzaman of Ruhia police station said.

Farm owner Abu Sayeed said he had rented three sheds for three years from Amir Hossain, a resident of Khekidanga village in Bhelarhat, to rear broiler chickens.

He said around 7,500 broiler chickens were being raised in the three sheds and poison was administered at the farm in the morning.

Abu Sayeed blamed a couple living in the farm area for the incident.

“I still cannot understand why they caused me this damage. I have suffered losses of nearly 1.7 million taka,” he said.

He demanded compensation and exemplary punishment for those involved.

OC Badiuzzaman said police had heard about the killing of the chickens by poisoning but no written complaint had been filed so far.

“If a complaint is filed, we will investigate and take legal action because it is a crime” he said.
