Illegal brick kilns fined BDT 2.9m in Kushtia drive

Bangladesh authorities fined illegal brick kilns BDT 2.9 million in Kushtia, demolishing hazardous units during a crackdown aimed at reducing air pollution and protecting public health for local residents.

The Department of Environment (DoE) in Bangladesh carried out a major crackdown on illegal brick kilns in Kushtia’s Sadar and Mirpur upazilas on Tuesday, imposing fines totaling BDT 2.9 million.

During the day-long operation, four unauthorized kilns in Sadar and 34 in Mirpur were inspected. Authorities identified eight kilns as severely polluting and hazardous to public health, leading to their partial demolition.

The drive was led by Executive Magistrate Momtaz Begum of the Khulna Divisional Environment Department with support from Emdadul Haque, Deputy Director of the Kushtia District Environment Department and members of law enforcement agencies.

Local residents had long complained about air pollution and health risks caused by these unapproved kilns, many of which had been operating without government permission for years. The kilns emit smoke and particulate matter that harm the environment and surrounding communities.

The DoE said such enforcement drives will continue in Kushtia to protect public health and prevent further environmental damage.
